5 Tips to Protect your Curls this Summer

Summer is just about here! The long, sunny days are just around the corner, and we all know what that means - time to start paying extra attention to our hair! If you're looking to keep your curly hair healthy and happy this summer, there are a few things you can do to make sure it gets the TLC it needs. Here are some tips on how to care for your hair this summer!

1. Wash your hair immediately after hitting the pool.

I suggest using my favorite brand of shampoo which is Malibu Swimmers Wellness Shampoo. Here are some benefits of using a shampoo specifically for swimmers:

  • It removes pool elements, including chlorine and copper

  • It combats crunchy, gummy, dry, brittle hair

  • It also retains hair’s natural oils for maximum moisture and shine

2. Use an ultra rich daily conditioner to moisturize your hair.

My favorite conditioner is by Innersense Organic Beauty. Their Color Radiance Conditioner works wonders. It’s a nourishing conditioner for medium texture, color, and chemically treated hair. I use this on everyone at Faith in Curls salon. If your looking for an alternative I also like Giovanni 50:50 Balance™ Hydrating-Calming Conditioner. It has deep moisturizing properties that help calm & restore dry hair. It’s ideal for over-processed or environmentally-stressed hair. And the summer sun can really stress out our hair!

3. Use a swim cap to protect your hair

Swim caps protect your hair from the harsh chlorine and the beating sun. I recently found these fashionable swim turbans by You Go Natural that were featured on Shark Tank. I ordered one for myself and I can’t wait to wear it! Happy Mane sells larger-sized swim caps designed to fit naturally curly hair. Click here to check them out!

4. Put your hair in braids or twists

If you or your child’s hair is prone to get tangled, this is especially for you. Braiding or twisting helps to keep your hair controlled during summer fun. After the swim session, take the braids or twists out and be sure to detangle the hair very well. Otherwise the tangles will only get worse. The best brush for detangling is the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler, which I also use on every client.

5. Dry your hair completely after washing and styling to prevent fungus

You may have heard the saying "Make sure you don’t go to bed with wet hair from swimming". This is good advice that you should follow. If you have high-density hair that holds a lot of water, going to bed with wet hair can cause it to sometimes have an unpleasant smell and leave the hair tangled. This can be a pain to work with in the morning. You can use a blow dryer with a diffuser or a hooded hair dryer to completely dry your hair after styling. Your hair and scalp will thank you later!

By following these simple tips, you can keep your hair looking its best all summer long!
